Whitby seaside resort has a skyline that is dominated by seagulls flying over the red roof tops of local fishermen cottages. Whitby

Whitby on a steep wooded inlet of the River Esk is still a working fishing port and a popular tourist centre. Whitby has been the scene of the first Synod held at Whitby Abbey of St Hilda; nurtured Caedmon the first English poet; fostered the genius of Captain James Cook; inspired the photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe; borne the bravery of the Scoresby family, the finest whalers of their day.
